Learning New Things

I recently saw a YouTube video entitled "How I learned Unity without following tutorials" from the Game Makers Toolkit. In the video he mentions not getting much info out of the point and click type tutorials. In learning, there are four core types of learners: Visual, Auditory, Reading and Writing, and Kinesthetic. The first three are pretty straight forward.

Visual learners are able to retain information when it's presented to them in a graphical format. Visual learners thrive when the information is presented in clear graphics of information hierarchy.

Auditory learners prefer to learn from listening to the information presented to them. Auditory learners work well in group settings and may enjoy reading aloud to themselves.

Reading and Writing learners focus on the written word. This type of learner succeeds with text heavy resources such as workbooks. This learning type is also very skilled at note taking.

Finally, the Kinesthetic learner. This learner needs active participation in the learning. This type takes a hands on approach to engage all of their senses during the course work.

Ok, having said all that. I'm not an expert on learning. I've been learning New stuff all of my lift and I have used all four of these styles to aid in my education. For instance, I'm using two styles in my current Unity learning. Reading and Writing and Kinesthetic. Following the code in the book isn't exactly complete Kinesthetic but it does help reinforce the lessons taught from the chapter. In addition to actually reading the book, taking notes and writing this blog have also helped reinforce what I read.

I'm glad I found the Game Makers Toolkit channel. It helped remind me of the different forms of learning and how using several different type may actually be beneficial.
